In this blog, I will highlight some of the top brands of organic lawn fertilizers. All of these are highly recommended, safe to use around children and pets, and very reasonably priced.
A Few For Review:
Cockadoodle DOO offers a 4-step program to healthy, green lawns. The program includes pre-treatment weed control, feeding young lawns, continuing weed control, and preparing your lawn for dormant periods during the Winter months. Detailed directions on how and when to apply (depending on your region) are provided. Obviously, use safe measures when applying this fertilizer, such as wearing a neckerchief over your mouth and nose, and washing your hands thoroughly after applying, but other than those steps, this fertilizer is safe and extremely effective.

Greener Green Grass specialize in liquid lawn fertilizers. They offer broad-range lawn fertilizers and more specific types of lawn fertilizers, such as: Winter Blend, Summer Blend, and High Traffic. The High Traffic blend is perfect for those with children who like to play outside and can tend to “beat-up” the lawn! They even sell a fertigation starter kit, including a fertigation tank and their soil booster blend (because it all starts with your soil) and their green starter blend. Safe for children, pets and the environment.

Ringer has been a trusted brand in organic gardening and lawn care for a many years. Ringer Lawn Restore is an all purpose lawn fertilizer. It is a slow release fertilizer which includes feather meal, bone meal, and soybean meal. It is approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is highly recommended by many lawn care enthusiasts.

Espoma, another trusted brand in organic fertilizers, offers weed control for lawns, all purpose lawn fertilizer, and an all-season, high nitrogen, phosphate free lawn fertilizer. These fertilizers promise not to burn your grass and are all slow-release formulas that will continue to feed your lawn throughout the year.

A Word to the Wise:
Remember, the type of grass that will grow successfully in your lawn depends on WHERE YOU LIVE! If you want to take your lawn care seriously, be sure to know what grass will grow well in your region. Fertilizer is great, but there’s no point in fertilizing grass that isn’t meant to grow in your area. Do your research, ask the employees at your local garden center, and my best recommendation: Ask the guy down the street with the beautiful, lush, green lawn!
Until next time, take care and happy gardening…err..happy lawning?

Have you heard anything good or bad about Converted Organics lawn fertilizers? They say it’s made from food waste, and appears to be available only in the Northeast for now:

I have heard good things about Converted Organics. They’re fairly new, and yes, you can only get them at retailers in the Northeast, but hopefully, as the company grows, they’ll start offering their products for sale online. You may be able to contact specific retailers and see if they take and ship orders over the phone or via email.
Just wanted to say thanks for the review, we really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Adrienne

You’re so very welcome, Adrienne! Keep up the great work!
What is a fertilizer that is considered UNSAFE - give me an example? And, I don’t mean a kid or a pet eating it out of the bag; I mean after it is applied. My personal opinion is all this talk about organic fertilizer is 100% hype designed for gullible fools.
Any man-made, chemical fertilizers are not safe. Not only can they “burn” your plants or grass (not allow enough water intake, causing the plant to die), but the long term effects of chemical fertilizers are apparent and well-documented. Although synthetic fertilizers may give your plants a boost, most of the chemicals cannot be used by the plants and end up being absorbed by the soil. The chemicals can harm and/or kill the natural microbes that reside in the soil, and in time, strip the soil of any natural benefits, including beneficial insects, bacteria, and fungus. Not to mention, the chemicals that are absorbed by the soil will leak into storm drains and ground water, which is then drank by wildlife. Chemical fertilizers are usually high in nitrogen, which does not benefit all plants, and because most are quick-release formulas, they do not support the plant in the long-run. Organic fertilizers are all natural, safe for the plant and environment, slow-release, and completely harmless.
Jennifer gave a great explanation as to why chemical fertilizers are harmful for the environment and why organic lawn fertilizers are a safe alternative. Another option for an organic fertilizer is GreenEdge, which is recycled from Class A biosolids from water reclamation facilities and transformed into safe and effective fertilizer.
Good points Jennifer! And it’s not just fertilizers that can be unsafe… Herbicides and insecticides can also be very damaging to people and pets (not to mention the soil and water).
